Malnutrition – Causes, Consequences and Prevention

Course Description

One out of every three people in the world suffers some form of malnutrition. It is a serious condition that happens when a diet does not contain the right amount of nutrients. It means “poor nutrition” and can refer to: under nutrition – not getting enough nutrients. over nutrition – getting more nutrients than needed. Globally Malnutrition affects 2 billion people in the world. 45% of deaths of children under five years of age are attributable to under-nutrition.

In Bangladesh, More than half the population suffers from malnutrition.  Severe acute malnutrition affects 450,000 children, while close to 2 million children have moderate acute malnutrition. Anemia affects 52% of children under five years of age. 41% of children under five years of age are stunted. 16% of children under five years of age are wasted. 36% of children under five years of age are underweight. A quarter of women are underweight and around 15% have short stature, which increases the risk of difficult childbirth and low-birth-weight infants. Half of all women suffer from anemia, mostly nutritional in origin.

This course focuses on why malnutrition occurs, the consequences, and how it can be prevented or its management.
