The need for pharmaceutical dosage forms is a very crucial one, as there are situations where only a specific route of administration is possible, and these forms are necessary in order to treat these diseases. The medication is the only way by which drugs reach their site of action hence the different routes of drug administration and dosage forms are used according to the treatment. The dosage form is the physical form of the medication, such as the solid, liquid, or gas by which it is distributed within the body as appropriate to the specific site of action. The proper formulation and designing of any dosage forms need to take into consideration the amount and physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the drug and additives which are used in the manufacturing of the product. Dosage forms are designed to provide better bioavailability, patient comfortability, and desired therapeutic effect. This course provides an in-depth look at the purpose of dosage forms, the necessity of dosage forms, their classification, the considerations needed to design dosage forms, and the important aspects of dosage form development.
